So I’m in Mallorca, an island I’ve never visited before. It’s wild how quickly a mood can lift once coast and sun and Spanish wine are involved. As soon as I landed I felt a sense of ease and even more so being reunited with our friend Tor who has been the phantom limb we’ve all been missing back in Cornwall. She arrived at the house like a warm breeze; as if it were yesterday we were all together. The kitchen played our backdrop whilst one was scooping soft avocado flesh from its leathered skin, another sliced fresh bread and made a pot of coffee; two were outside gathering wild flowers from the meadow and another wrangled the two year old. We sat outside eating and catching up, migrated to the pool and lay there intertwined until dusk.
After showers and naps we drove into the local village and drank wine around the table until the sky lost its light and everyone took it in turns to entertain the kids or walk around the block with the six month old we’d only just met. When we got home the sky was ink and freckled with stars and we gazed up in silence. We have four more days of this paradise and this morning we’ll do yesterday all over again.
For now here are some good things as we’re exiting the worst of winter…
Good things to cook
Ricotta and blueberry pancakes with whipped honey butter
Because the cold is never really gone: sinigang na Gulay (Filipino tamarind soup)
Sunset pasta: aka preserved lemons and tahini linguine
Chopped purple sprouting broccoli salad!
Chicken schnitzel with a herby Caesar dressing
Hungover claypot chicken and rice
Kitchenware staples

Community shout outs
Whilst I’m in Mallorca with some wonderful pals, just want to shout out about them and their creative businesses. Cornwall is a cornucopia of creatives and I’m always in awe of these women who have always had such a wonderful work life balance and manage to put out incredible work, consistently.
Amelia is not only a beautiful photographer, but also a designer, cultural curator and owner of DARN studio. She pulls together creative supper clubs, designs beautiful scarves and pyjamas and art directs incredible shoots for the likes of Orla Kiely.
Tor is also an insane photographer and is the only person who’s ever made me feel truly beautiful through the lens. She also makes artful, sculptural pots through Toro Studio.
Kathryn is an interior design whiz, having styled and created interiors for hundreds of houses and commercial projects over the years through her interior design studio Linea (you’ve probably seen her work on The Modern House). She’s now best known in Cornwall for running Kiln Sauna, where her love of design and Scandinavian sauna culture collides.
Kyla is a modern day healer. She can read your body like a book and is so knowledgeable on all things acupuncture, physio, massage and reiki. She runs Onda out of her studio in Penryn and will literally fix your mind, soul, body and heart.
This was so soothing to read, and I love the recipes you shared. Thank you, Cat!!
