I fly to New York tomorrow, a city I’ve not been back to since I was 21 years old. I haven’t made a plan, or any reservations – my friend Meg who I’m seeing out there, has done all the heavy lifting. Of course our days are scheduled around food: coffee, bagels, brunch, lunch, lite bites, late night eats, cocktails, wine, repeat for five days. It’s a relief not to have made all the plans – to be expectant and surprised. New York is a city wrapped up in so much narrative – we impose these romanticisms and stories and nostalgia because it feels like the epicentre of many things. I’ve been building tall tales on this city for a decade and I’m curious to see if I’ll be proved wrong. Recommendations to come next week, but for now, here are some variations on the theme.
