It’s rare that I’m out the door to the other side of London by 7.30am, but here I am at Layla Bakery on Portobello Road, the sun shining, a sausage roll just devoured, post-event that I was hosting for my friend and client Sophie, who runs a fantastic Burmese furniture brand called Kalinko. After a weekend at home, being cooked and cared for, multiple baths and a few roaring fires (as well as some time with my very grumpy niece), I’m back in town until my trip to New York next week. The shorter, darker days feel more challenging, and getting out of bed never feels very fun, but there’s always eggs to be scrambled, coffee to be percolated and soups to be made to get through the darkness.
