I’ve just got back into Vancouver and have retreated to my room like a teenager. It’s dark and raining and as soon as I got in, I ordered Vietnamese food from my favourite Lunch Lady, mainly for a side of bone broth that was delicious and healing, spiked with star anise and tenderly sweet. I head back to London on Monday, so I’m soaking in the forests and the mountain air for a few days. I miss California and the heat and I wished I could have stayed in Ojai forever more days. I’m penning my next essay all around that quick 24 hour trip and how a certain number has been signalling a shift, presents in the winding roads up and down through Los Padres National Forest. After about seven weeks of moving between spaces, and pretty much four months away from my London flat, I’m both ready to return to routine and also wishing I could float forever. For now there are mountain towns to visit and grilled cheese sandwiches to eat.
