There is a creator called Alice Sum who posts regularly about gut and skin health foods. A lot of her content is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It just makes sense. Normalise eating rice for breakfast! I often find myself reaching for a piece of bread out of the freezer, but this morning I left my bed at 7.37am and I put a cup of rice in the cooker. By 8am, showered and changed, the kitchen was fragranced with the nutty whispers of sesame oil and spring onion, my little trick for making the best rice in the world (I write about two more hacks for fluffy rice below). I’ve seen a version of this Japanese/Korean breakfast on Alice’s profile multiple times, always convinced I don’t have time before work to give my gut such a reward in the morning. But in the time it takes for the rice to cook I prepped four little bowls of goodness, sat on the floor of my living room, looking at the flowers friends brought over the other day. Serving everything in separate bowls is a good exercise in eating slowly – I’m usually someone who voraciously mixes all their food together and wolfs it down. With this set of bowls, I allowed myself to slow down a little and save each sip, each bite, each crunch.
