The other day, friends of mine were sat around the table discussing our internal monologue. One of them asked us: a) do you have an internal monologue (all of us answered unanimously, yes) and b) how do you refer to yourself: I, you, we, or by your name? As someone who spends her entire life in conversation with my internal monologue, I guess I use all four ways of addressing myself. As someone who also lives alone, I spend a lot of time talking to myself or muttering things under my breath (namely: “Cat, for fuck’s sake!”).
So instead of talking to myself in isolation, I thought I’d talk to myself but into a microphone and release it for the entire internet to listen to, because that is what perennially online people with penchants for podcasts do.
But to add some structure, I thought I’d perhaps answer some questions to guide the audio essay a little – so… do you have anything to ask me? I’m aware I literally write a newsletter called Since No One Asked, so no worries if not (!!) but there might be some thoughts or feelings around something I’ve written about or even some questions about food and cooking for one I might be able to shed some light on.
This could be the worst idea I’ve ever had. But let’s see. You can either message me on Substack using the button below, or just reply to this email, or feel free to comment! I’m going to awkwardly record this on Friday morning, so send anything through before then.
Hi Cat! I’m curious about your writing routine for this newsletter around other work commitments, and how you write too - do you gather ideas in a notebook, then sit down to write? Does it all come together very quickly or do you spend a lot of time editing?
